I think this is a bit of a misconception.

Charles (may he rest in peace) did lean rather much to the right though in
his later years his views seem to soften.  He was, however, in many ways
amazingly tolerant.  I can think of folks who lean the other way who are
much less so.

TOL, for those who have not yet heard, is soon to be no more.
