Reference in an earlier post about North Dakota reminded me
of a story one of my highschool classmates tells.
He was, as am I, a native of the woods of NW Wisconsin. He
was employed by a company and lived for a number of years
in Bismarck, North Dakota. Most of his fellow workers were
native Dakotans, and avid fishermen who liked to spend a vacation
every year in NE Minnesota's heavily forested "Arrowhead" country
in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes".
My classmate was curious what these native Dakotans thought of
the deep forests of Minnesota after their long life on the treeless Great
Plains.
The common answer: "When you've seen one tree you've seen them all."
David Strang.
