Like other British churches that were abbeys it has retained the "Abbey" 
in its name so it is styled the Abbey and Cathedral Church of St Alban.  
In the diocese it is generally referred to as the Abbey and I cannot 
recall ever hearing it referred to simply as the cathedral.
