When my cat Smudge climbed on my lap last night, I noticed that there
appeared to be a large chunk missing out of his neck just below his ear.
It was lightly scabbed over, but clearly the blood beneath hadn't quite
clotted yet. I couldn't imagine what had happened, because he was fine in
the morning, but thought maybe he had gotten bitten. Decided I'd better get
him in to the vet this morning.
This morning the place was totally scabbed over, but I was worried about
infection, so I took him to the vet, still very puzzled. I started
thinking maybe it was an abscess of some kind.
So we were in the examining room, and just before the vet came in, the
thing exploded all over the floor! It was an abscess, all right, with a
lot of necrotic tissue to boot, and the cat was running a fever. I can't
imagine how it just came up like that. So he had minor surgery involving
stitches and a drain, and I took him home an hour later. Yuck!! My
suspicion is that in one of his numerous rounds of play fighting with his
larger buddy, he did get bitten and the bite got infected.
At any rate, it seems that the money the pediatricians used to get now goes
to the vets!
