Since both my parents grew up with all those hymns and we kids knew a lot
of them (thanks to the aforementioned John Charles Thomas radio program),
they were standard fare for singing in the car on long road trips. By the
time I was in my teens we were heading for 4-part harmony as one of my
brothers developed into a passable tenor, my dad was a bass, and I sang
alto. The melody line was left to mom and the brother whose voice hadn't
yet changed. (He later turned into a tenor and the other brother slid down
to baritone.)
