New Bern is the home town of my late sister-in-law, Caroline, whose father
worked for the Southern Railroad (now part of the Norfolk Southern). Her
mother was a Giswold. She remarried after my brother George's death,
this time a Branstad. The Giswold's and the Branstad's have the history of
intermarriage with the Strang's, and Caroline ended up directly associated
with all three families.
Caroline was a Mary K cosmetic tycoon and in her later years always drove
a pink Cadillac car. She never lost her soft, Carolina accent, even after
a
half century of living in the frozen North. She always referred to her
brother
Jim ("We southern boys are hard drinkers") as simply, "Brother", pronounced
"Brotha". Her mother, Bergit, a northerner by birth, picked up the
Carolina
accent on marriage in her twenties, and it was still strong at her death at
98.
New Bern is worth a visit for the restored colonial NC Capitol, Tryon
Palace, especially in the spring for the displays of tulips.
David Strang - who loves North Carolina.
