One of the larger cohorts of people moving to new York City (After immigrants
and newly-minted college graduates are people from the Sunbelt -- Retirees who
have lost their spouses and are no longer able to drive, play golf or run the
boat. So these (usually 80-somethings) move to a small apartment above the
grocery store in Manhattan (well, maybe 20 floors above the grocery <g>).

Everything they need -- medical services, shopping movies, shows, concerts,
church -- are all a subway or bus or taxi ride -- or a brisk walk away.

Of course the lagniappe is often that their grand children or great
grandchildren are in the city as well (and might crash at Grandma's for a week
between roommates <g>.

And they can get great meals delivered 24/7/365 by picking up the phone.

Cheers,
Jim
