If I were making this for myself I'd also sprinkle a teensy bit
of cayenne pepper on each slice, but not everyone would
consider that an improvement.
What a wonderful world we live in. My grandmother would
faint at the suggestion of maple syrup & cayenne pepper
in the same dish. But they're great together.
