Yes - in larger & newer supermarkets. Also at Lowe's & Home Depot (big box 
home improvement stores). Haven't seen them at Wal-Mart, Target, Staples, 
etc.

Shops choose the muzak they play according to whether they want you to
shop quickly or slowly.  The longer they can keep you in the store the
more chance they have of selling you something you didn't go in to buy.

This side of the pond a lot of stores have "basket only" checkouts or
ones where you can scan a few things, pay and get out.  The latter ones
mean that one member of staff can supervise a number of tills. Do they
exist in the US?
