It's only a matter of time before it will become a necessity, IMO... I live
near several condo complexes, owned mostly by retired folks, some in their
late 80s and still driving - some good drivers, others not so much. They
sometimes drive 15 miles an hour down the little road we live on, or take 5
minutes to back out of their carport, or sail through stop signs... often
with no negative results, amazingly enough. I think there will come a time
when people of a certain age should have to pass actual driving tests that
look for reaction time, spatial acuity, and other age related visual and
physical causes of accidents.
My mom (who has been blind in one eye since '97) drove for at least 4 or 5
years past when she probably should have stopped. She would tell me over and
over that she would decide when to stop driving... that she 'would know'
when the time was right. I never argued, just stated a few times that it
would be terrible for an accident to result in her demise or permanent state
of disability, or the death or same for others. After moving to Houston
there was one major (stupid) accident which totaled her car, but she bought
a new one. Constant dings and scratches, breaking off side view mirrors...
friends always 'offering her rides' because they were afraid to ride with
her (she never once 'got that'... and was delighted not to use her own
gasoline (be still your heart Jim G).
When my sister came to Houston to live (with mom), she had been in or caused
so many accidents herself that she would overreact to almost anything my mom
did while driving and would throw herself against the side door, frantically
'break the car floor' and sometimes cry, out of fear (without saying
anything ), that my mom finally 'got it' and sold her car. I'm sure there
are a lot of 80-something drivers out there like my mom was... For years
after 'giving up driving' mom regretted it.
