Historically in the USA, all able bodied men have been termed the Militia.
The Militia Acts of 1792 explicitly stated that the Militia consisted of
each and every free able bodied white male citizen of the respective states
18 and over and under 45 years. It also stated that each member of  militia
had to provide a weapon.

Rules for militias have been modified through the years. The current US
Code states that it consists of all able bodied male citizens (or those who
have filed an intent to become citizens) between 17 and 45 and women who
are members of the National Guard.
