This is one of the places even angels fear to tread, but your friend is making too wide an assumption. Australia is a younger state than USA,  and has had both a gun buyback scheme and severe gun control fo over 10 years now without the sky falling in. Youth is no excuse.

Just like my response to a friend who said the U.S. can't be like the other countries with virtually no homicide, because they're vastly older political entities, and the U.S. is relatively young and still fantasizes about frontierism and stake-claiming and -holding.  To which my response was, Yes, and they were young political entities once too.  They had to start the civilising process at some point.  Now it's our turn.  And the result will be that one of these aeons, the U.S. will grow up, put on its big boy pants, and behave towards itself for a change.
