My Richmond, VA relatives didn't appear to be rich.  The row  houses
with slaves quarters at the back, looked like very ordinary housing.
So, although I don't deny the truth in the basic premise that the  majority
of white people in the South before the Civil War didn't  own slaves, the
 rest of it depends on whose relatives.  :-)
