The famed Kapellmeister of  the Leipzig Gewarndhaus and Director of  the
New York Philharmonic died yesterday at 88.  He was another victim  of
Parkinson's.  He was a highly visible advocate of German  reunification.
 
He was born in Silesia, then part of Germany, but ceded to Poland in  that
land-grab in 1945 instituted by Stalin. This saw the eastern one half  of
prewar Poland become part of Russia, and a big hunk of the eastern  portion
of prewar Germany become part of Poland to compensate.  It  also created
the infamous "DP's" (displaced persons) which resulted in a mass  exodus
of Germans to the west in numbers acceding the present Syrian one.

unforgetable.
