I was raised in a Methodist household, and signed several temperance
pledges through the years. There was NEVER any alcohol of any sort
in our home.
It turns out my father was right to be death on alcohol because of our
family genetic predisposition to alcohol abuse. Two uncles and my
younger brother died of it. Smart guys, too: two physicians and one
dentist. Intelligence obviously has nothing to do with alcoholism.
I still remember one Christmas when the local Methodist minister rose
up into the high pulpit, and announced that he had cancelled his
subscription to Time Magazine (then in its prime) because of the booze
advertisements, whereupon he threw several dozen pages of full page
liquor ads to the floor of the nave. It was quite effective!
