Certainly the Germans think so. Contrary to common perception,
there ARE speed limits on portions of the autobahn, usually in urban
congested areas and usually to 80 KPH (about 50 MPH).

The rest of it is wide open.

When there is an accident on the autobahn system it can be a real
duesey, with multiple fatalities.

I think the best way to understand just how fast German drivers
push their cars is to relax in a wayside area, and listen to the tremendous
racket of the cars going by at 100+ miles per hour.

The only way they can get away with this is by (1) having much better
highways than we have in the USA, and (2) thorough drivers training
so that there is good control even moving at those high speeds; (3) better
maintenance of the vehicles themselves.
