I think the essential value of hospice care is that it is realistically 
supportive.  I note that Dame Cicely Saunders, who started the modern 
hospice movement, began her professional career as a nurse before 
becoming a social worker and then a doctor.  As such she was uniquely 
qualified to develop the approach of holistic care that enables someone 
to continue to operate as effectively as possible for as long as possible.

That being there with and for the patient strikes me as being the core 
of nursing care.  As a priest, and as someone who has visited members of 
their own family in hospital, I value the gentle honesty that nurses 
offer when talking about those in their care - naturally within 
appropriate professional constraints.
