Totally off the wall question:
 
What do you call the auto front grill located where the front bumper  and
auto license traditionally have been located?
 
This zone is usually separated from the fashionable narrow grill, but  also
sometimes not (certain Audi and Ford models come to mind) and there  is,
instead, a large front grill extending top to bottom at the front of the  
car.
 
This extra grill zone did not exist until perhaps ten years ago.
 
Have auto engines changed such that this extra grill is now  necessary?
