Interesting, because until I saw David's post, I hadn't even noticed this grille phenomenon!  Nor the headlights as "eyes"!  The only thing I've noticed in recent years has been those blinding bluish headlights that I think should be outlawed. I haven't seen as many of them recently, so maybe they're falling out of favor.
