Indeed. I was on Diocesan Council when he was bishop; my wife was clergy in 
the diocese. Neither of us had a clue, nor did anyone else I knew.

I remember that after David Johnson shot himself I was talking
with a girl around twelve or thirteen who *insisted* that his wife
should have known something was wrong. And should have
intervened somehow. I remember explaining that he'd worked
very hard to hide this part of himself from everybody. We're
not psychic.
