[Magdalen] Remembering Charles Smith

I had the same feelings as Roger, upon seeing the reminder pop up in
my phone calendar yesterday.
There are a number of issues here.
First, I note that Facebook hasn't quite solved the problem of whether
to discontinue a page after the owner's death. I myself was grateful
for the reminder, and was able to recognise that despite the issues I
had with CS personally, I was and am still very grateful for all the
work that went into  his web development.
I think we can safely challenge Shakespeare here and say that this is
not an occasion where "the good is oft interred with their bones."
Second, is the recognition that building a society takes not only a
lot of hard work, it also demands a level of negation of self-interest
with which few of us ever fully comply. ( I try not to look at
Australiai's current political masters  -and they are almost all of
them, male-  at this point.)
So far. it seems to me, there seems to be little opportunity for
personal self-improvement via the internet. I note that although I
have a Workout app on my phone, for example, nobody need know whether
I use it regularly or not. Maybe I need to set a up a Facebook Group
and set challenges....
