Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, longtime president of Notre Dame and national civil
rights leader, died last night at the age of 97. He was one of the heroes
of my youth and I hadn't realized he was still alive. He belongs to a
generation of Catholic leaders who worked for social justice, and he also
led a change in the course of Catholic higher education in this country.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
