While I certainly remember the versicle, I do not remember the  response
as something routine during the reign of TEC '28 Prayer Book.   The
"Thanks be to God" strikes me as a high church addition after Vatican  II
and the new ECUSA '79 Prayer Book.
 
This may be a faulty recollection, or simply a regional phenomenon  however.
