Dendrology mode.....on.
My father would also apply this "glue" expression for the extensive
pine barrens of NW and Central Wisconsin. These are sandy, flat
infertile areas dominated by Jack Pine (Pinus banksiana) forests with
some Hill's Oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis). The sand, fine as that on any
tropical beach, is really outwash from the receeding Wisconsin Pleistocene
Glaciation. The land is highly acidic, and is being tapped for fracking
sand
as well as being marvelous for the cranberry farms.
These forests need fire to survive, since neither of the dominant species
can reproduce under their own shade. However, there has been good
fire control over the past 50 years, and so you have the interesting
phenomenon that there is an understory of Eastern White Pine (Pinus
strobus) and "Norway" (Red) Pine (Pinus resinosa) throughout the
barrens. These are the climax tree species for the barrens, but were
infrequently seen because of the fires.
Dendrology mode.....Off.
