I tend to give small charitable contributions. Usually to local animal shelters (all the children in my life seem to love their pets). And I encourage them to imagine the cats' and dogs' joy and gratitude. I really don't feel I can shop for kids these days. We shut off gift-giving for the nieces & nephews at age 13. -M
