[Magdalen] BSA

I don't know, Grace. I wonder if our early background of battles against the Indians led to a regard for the soldier that some other countries had left in their past. We're a very young country, and of course we were always fighting wars, usually for territory (except the Civil War, I guess.) The 20th century was all about war. In the 1950s, Eisenhower warned us about the military-industrial complex, where the major business of America was becoming war machines, but when did we ever listen? War has always been seen as masculine, and the President is the Commander in Chief, so maybe that perception militates (heh) against a woman. But all that still doesn't seem like the whole answer.

This is a fascinating thread. Can someone explain to me why we've never had a woman president in the US, when there are so many countries that have them (or prime ministers) or have had them, and nobody batted an eye? What is it about our history and culture that has mitigated against that?
