Sounds like the rural southern custom of "dinner on the grounds." One of the annual Harmonia Sacra sings takes place this Sunday in Hamburg, VA, all day long with a huge dinner spread out on trestle tables n the middle of the day.

Don’t many of the Russian Orthodox (in Russia) services go on for the better
part of the day, with congregants bringing lunch in a picnic basket and a

I remember Fr. Charles Moore (St Mark's, Philadelphia) talking about this at
length upon his return from a two month sabbatical in the Soviet Union.
I thought it fascinating.
