Well, Fire Police and Emergency Personnel jobs have often been closed to the 
"Other" so some of this continues in many communities.

As for David's comment -- it certainly is immoral to discharge a career military 
person at 19 year 11 months -- makes sure Pensions "Stay Within Budget" rather 
than Congress raise the acceptable budget level -- heck it might require a tax 
increase or cutting the spendi . . . err looting of the treasury by 
well-connected Pentagon Contractors, but we digress. . .

Anyone who has been in the military that long should be a valuable addition to 
the staff of many companies. I know Union Pacific and other Railroads have tried 
to concentrate hiring for certain positions like Engineer and Conductor with 
Veterans with more than anew years in the service. And those jobs generally 
start at about $45k and can rise to more than $100k. A strong adherence to 
discipline and following orders is essential for rail safety.
