It was certainly Castilian Spanish at UW-Madison when I took the  language.
 
There was a subtle, but definite undercurrent in the Spanish  Department
(actually Spanish and Portuguese) that New World Spanish was second
rate.
 
When I read something aloud in Spanish, my partner giggles that I  sound
like a lisping Castilian.
