I studied French in St Pierre and Miquelon eons ago and one of the
teachers
recounted hearing some people speaking French on the Ile d'Orleans (north
of Quebec City). She said she thought they were speaking English., (St
Pierrais pride themselves on a Parisian accent)>>>>>>

A boyhood play-mate who lived in an adjoining property, worked her way
up to be Chairperson of the French Department at Pomona College in
California. Her specialty was regional French accents, and also historical
French. She told of being stopped for speeding along the same Seine-side
highway where Princess Di was killed. When she produced a California
driver's license, the gendarmes immediately hauled her down to their
gendarmerie, assuming she had a stolen identity. The problem was that
her French was so good, they could not believe she spoke French as a
learned second language. It took the US Embassy to work it all out.
Sadly, she was a breast cancer fatality about 20 years ago.
