[Magdalen] If I stood up and put weight on the legs, the cramps went away immediately.

Which reminds me -- and perhaps pubmates might have an answer . . .
Once upon a time in my impetuous youth, I drank prodigious amounts of beer.
Then, about 25 years ago,I started waking up with really painful leg cramps on
the rear of my calves. I discovered when I didn’t drink beer, there were no leg
cramps.
So I pretty much gave up on beer in favor of flavored seltzer and red wine with
dinner.
On occasions, going out with friends we'd do beer and pizza, and sure enough,in
the middle of the night -- leg cramps.
While in Vermont, the restaurant was "out" of any wine I considered drinkable,
so decided to try a local beer -- Switchback brewed in Burlington. The first
night, I had one glass -- no leg cramps. The next night I tried 2 glasses -- no
leg cramps. and the fourth night . . . well I drank more of the stuff than I
had drank 25 years ago! No leg cramps.
Upon return, we went out and I had two pony bottles of Rolling Rock -- and sure
enough -- leg cramps!
So the question is -- what causes the leg cramps -- and why the local beer in
Vermont did not result in leg cramps?
Cheers,
Jim
