My cousin, Connie, who lives in West Central Wisconsin in the rolling
hills of the unglaciated "Driftless Zone," built her home in what had been
a cornfield about 40 years ago.

There were no trees, naturally, so I dug some trees out of my wild 80
in Chippewa County, and planted them in her yard at her direction.
This included a Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi).

The larch is now 70' and she called me today to tell me that the tree
was crowded with all sorts of chickadees, nuthatches, and cardinals
waiting to dive down to her birdfeeder.

She described the tree as a Christmas tree filled with birds.

What fun to know a tree I planted so long ago is giving so many
creatures pleasure now.
