The evidence indicates that they were assistants when the split
occurred. The statement on the Episcopal Church in South Cartolina's
website says that Fr Wallace, the latest returner, was associate at
Christ the King, Waccamaw on Pawley's Island and stayed there because he
loved the place and the people. However a subsequent link with another
parish left hoim without a job.

The same article has a link to the reprot of Fr Free's return to TEC.
He was at St John's on St John's Island. That church's website indicates
that the present Rector has beenin that post for 10 years, since before
the split. It follows that Fr Free must have been in a more junior
position when the split occurred.

As Jim G indicated it is probable that the Rector led the move awau from
TEC, which would leave the associates in a difficult position. If they
did not also secede then they would be out of a job. I know that the
hiring situation in TEC is very different from my experience in the C/E
but I think it would still be very difficult to find another post when
not in a parish and without a decent reference from rector and someone
on the vestry.

They were between a rock and a hard place. In that situation I can
understand their reluctance to respond to a letter from Bishop von
Rosenberg when their Rector said their allegiance should be to Bishop
Lawrence.
