Toying with fight songs is not on. The MSU song has a phrase against which
the first phrase of Jingle Bells makes an amusing counterpoint. Woe to any
freshman who discovers this and tries it out in rehearsal or in the
stadium.>>>

Yet, toying can be done within the system, and no one seems to complain.

The present regime of the UW-Madison Marching Band has taken to
marching the band into the football stadiums with a showy fast high step.

As a result, the players are unable to play the classical/original version
of the incomparable school song, "On Wisconsin", but instead play
a sort of jazz version with short phrases. It's all about how it looks on
TV and not how it sounds. The Wisconsin Band (and most college bands)
have gotten so big that there is still a fairly big sound anyway.

Still, most former Wisconsin graduates and, especially, band members,
think it is a travesty.
