There are batteries to keep systems going.  Normally they are charged by 
the engines but if a system is not switched off then the batteries will 
go flat. The battery also provides power for starting the engines, just 
as it does in a car.  Having systems draw their power from the battery 
means that the battery stabilises the coltage for the electrical equipment.
