I am a frequent reader of, and sometime contributor to, Daily Kos. Here's a
pretty good article on the subject from yesterday that very much pertains
to that issue. They guy supports Mike's arguments pretty persuasively,

I personally think guns should be treated pretty much like
automobiles....licensed, regulated, and insured. No license and no
insurance, you're in the doghouse.....and furthermore, you can't operate
one below a certain age. And they'd better be locked up away from kids
while not in use or you are in serious trouble.
