Our organist/choir director in Glendale would say something at rehearsal like, 
"Are you guys comfortable with this hymn? and everyone would respond yeas, then 
he'd poll by section, an, of course, everyone would want to say yes.

And then he'd say -- that's great, because while you're singing it, I'll be 
playing something else altogether."
