I'm here for the consecration, which will take place later this morning. Went to Evening Prayer yesterday with about 50 people, and I have to say, I think the acoustics are terrible, at least for spoken services. It's the second one I've attended, the first being a regular weekday MP service with a handful of students. The effect, to my ears at least, is barn like. I've read the it was basically designed around acoustics for the organ, so we"ll see today, I guess--though I'll be watching from the tent outside!
We got there early for the service, because we weren't sure how big a crowd there would be. We happened in on a rehearsal with stand-ins for the principal players to put the acolytes through their seepaced. Then the PB and ABC came in and were briefed a bit.
Meanwhile the sound technicians and camera crew were all over the place getting things set up. What was very strange was seeing the whole scene projected on four walls high up around the chapel. I said something to our seminarian about feeling as if I were in a mega church with the hymns projected on screens. She said they do that at the Thursday evening service! Ah, change...
There will be a demonstration of the organ at 1 this afternoon that I hope we'll stay for. My friend has to get back for a vestry meeting at 7, so I don't know. We will definitely miss the Choral Evensong at 5:30.
