Can you imagine the difficulty people had with Joan's surname - both 
pronouncing it when they read it and spelling it when they heard it?  
Just to remind you it was McDonough.  McDonoghue was a familiar attempt 
at pronunciation while McDonner or McDonna were attempts at spelling it.
