I am firmly of the opinion that parents owe it to their kids to teach 
them basic survival skills.  Among these I list basic cooking so they 
can buy the ingredients for and prepare a simple meal and sewing skills 
to repair a seam and sew on buttons.  There used to be more on the list 
sich as rewiring a plug and a fuse on an electricity distribution board 
but we now have moulded plugs and circuit-breakers on distribution 
boards so those skills are no longer needed.
