I was very near-sighted and got my first glasses at age 8.  I  probably
should have had them years earlier.  In any case my childhood 
corresponded to heavy snow years there in NW Wisconsin, and while
tussling with friends in the snow mounds, I lost my glasses.
 
My mother, who really didn't realize how badly I needed glasses, did
the punishment thing:  There would be no new glasses for at least  a
year.  It was an uncharacteristically harsh attitude.  However,  in the 
spring,
several months later, I found them while raking leaves.  The  lesson
was learned, nonetheless.  I never again lost my glasses.
 
In my riper years, the right eye has remained near-sighted, but  the
left has become somewhat far-sighted.
