Or, within one state: Louisiana, where the French and Spanish portions,
particularly along the river, are mostly laid out in arpents and
metes-and-bounds, while the Louisiana Purchase portion (except along the
MS and Red Rivers) is largely in township layout.
In southern Mississippi (e.g.., Natchez area and south - Adams,
Wilkinson and adjacent counties), along the river and early by-ways, the
earlier layouts were absorbed by township layout, but the older ones
remain recognized, so it is not unusual to run across higher section
numbers than 36.
