Well, actually Elbridge Gerry was of the Democratic-Republican party, which 
is the ancestor of today's Democratic party. The Republican party wasn't 
founded until the 1850's and had no antecedents; it first ran a presidential 
candidate in 1856.

Chad,

I realise the reasoning but that does not mean that I approve of it or
regard it as consistent with my understanding of democracy or the US
Constitution.  Let us not forget that gerrymandering draws its etymology
from Gov and then VP Gerry who was a member of what is now the
Republican Party.
