Cedar is an overused name for trees.  There are actually only  four
true Cedars; (1) Atlantic (Blue) Cedar, (2) Deodar Cedar, (3) Cyprian
Cedar, and (4) Cedar of Lebanon.  They all make very large, but  very
attractive landscaping trees where they are hardy.
 
Many of the Cupressus family trees are labeled "Cedar", but they
are not true cedars.
 
I suspect you are maybe referring to Eastern Red Cedar which is
really a juniper.
