You've put your fingers on one of the more confusing areas of
"cedar" nomenclature.
 
The Eastern White Cedar is Thuja occidentalis.
 
The Western Red Cedar is Thuja plicata.
 
The Eastern Red Cedar is Juniperus virginiana
 
And none of them are true cedars.
