It clearly has *something* to do with the Pope's visit, or he wouldn't have timed it the way he did.  Poor guy.  I don't like his attitude on many (well, maybe all) issues, but there was never any way he was going to survive his leadership role after the Teabagger Advent of 2010.  But actually giving up his seat in Congress?  That shows how powerful things got for him recently.
