It used to a be principal Feast day on the Calendar -- along with All Saints, 
Christmas, Easter, Ascension and WhitSunday.

Back in high school (and college) calling the fall semester or term the 
"Michaelmas term" always made for a few (odd and sometimes pesky) friendships 
while leaving others befuddled.

It also means "Christ the Fair Glory" from the hymnal -- a favorite hymn of 
mine. (#282, H82).
