I've mentioned before my mother's choice to be cremated after the
outrageous cost of my younger brother's funeral.  Mother died in
late November, and weather being what it is in the Upper Midwest,  we
waited until the next July for the family gathering at graveside to
inter the ashes.
 
Cremation is MUCH cheaper than the alternative, and one can usually
pay in advance for services.  I'm prepaid as is my partner - it  was
about $1,500 ten years ago for the basics.
