Well, tomorrow morning I will leave on a trip to Southwest Virginia to
volunteer for a couple of days at a Remote Area Medical clinic in Rural
Retreat. I left a piece of my heart in that part of the world about 25
years ago, and I'm so glad to have the opportunity to go back and do
something useful. The clinic will run from Friday morning through Sunday; I
will have to come back Saturday night, because we have the Bishop
visiting on Sunday morning, and a friend and I are celebrating at a Celtic
Eucharist in the evening.( I expect to sleep all day Monday!)
Tomorrow I will also have the great good fortune to spend the afternoon
with Helen Lewis in Abingdon. She has been a friend and mentor since the
summer I spent in Berea during seminary, and at 92 she is as energetic and
inspiring as ever.

And I had a wonderful piece of good luck today regarding housing for this
weekend. They had originally told me that they couldn't provide any
low-cost housing for this event, so I had made reservations at a place not
too far from the clinic site. Then yesterday, along with the list of
last-minute information, they included the names of several people who had
offered to house the RAM volunteers. I emailed two of them, and when I
hadn't heard by about 6 this evening, I decided that was that. About 7:30 I
got an email message from a woman who said she'd been working in her yard
all day and had just checked her email. She had one room left and asked me
to get in touch as soon as possible, because she'd had another email after
mine. So I called her right back--and I have a place to stay for free!
She sounds delightful, and when she told me that she was sorry she hadn't
answered the first time I called because she was on the phone, and she's
never figured out how to do call waiting, I told her I thought we'd get
along just fine!
So I called and cancelled my hotel reservation, saving about $130!

Life is good... Prayers for traveling mercies will be appreciated.

Grace
