I wonder if she ever had the treatment available for her day:   Salvarsan?
Though by the time syphilis has progressed to the tertiary stage, 
treatment is of limited value.  The damage has usually been  done
but further progression can be accomplished.
 
Areas hit by the treponema organism are also those hit by the
related Lyme disease:  Skin, cardiac, CNS, joints, babies in  utero.
